At 701 Whaley last Thursday night EngenuitySC held its IgNITE!, a leadership conference to showcase some of the region’s knowledge economy catalysts. That was also the day of the Boeing announcement, so the day’s efforts in economic development, both the New Economy and the Old Economy, got an overlapping jolt. More ... Now what? The City of Columbia is considering a $194 million tax increment finance project, $40 million in the northern sector of town, and $154 million in the Innovista. This is the same city that couldn’t account for its spending for the past four years, leaving the books in such poor shape the mayor declined to run for re–election. And then what? More ... Up until the middle of the last century, the F.W. Woolworth Co. really did have some items priced for 10 cents or even less. When Dodd’s Five & Dime branched out to the Forest Lake Shopping Center in the mid–’50s, the store still had 10–cent items.
