Skyhawks dominate Laurence Manning
On a cold night at Hammond on Friday October 16, the Skyhawks’ offense was on fire as it dominated Laurence Manning 40–6 on senior night. While the seniors for Hammond were getting honored before the game, it was junior quarterback Dave Nidiffer who stole the show, completing 12–of–17 passes for 304 yards, six touchdowns, and one interception. Laurence Manning had opportunities inside the Hammond red zone but was unable to convert on many fourth down opportunities.
Hammond came out of the gates fast. After receiving the opening kick off, Nidiffer connected with Aaron Walters on a 77–yard catch and run for a touchdown. The extra point gave Hammond a quick 7–0 lead.
Laurence Manning tried to respond. After a kick–off return to their 42–yard line, Laurence Manning was able to get two big runs from Banks Lee to get the ball inside the Hammond 35–yard line. However, the Skyhawk’s defense stiffened and Laurence Manning was forced to give the ball up when quarterback Patrick Anderson was unable to complete a fourth down pass.
The Skyhawks took quick advantage of the turnover on downs. Two big passes from Nidiffer to Walters and Ron Millhouse of 12 and 14 yards respectively took the Skyhawks into Laurence Manning territory. After two 5–yard runs by Les Cotter, Nidiffer capped off the drive with a 25–yard touchdown pass to Millhouse. The extra point was blocked keeping the score at 13–0.
Hammond kept the scoring going in the second quarter. Following yet another Laurence Manning turnover on downs, Hammond again moved quickly down the field. Two runs from Hunter George of 11 and 9 yards sandwiched a 22–yard pass from Nidiffer to Walters moving Hammond deep into Laurence Manning territory. Nidiffer finished this drive off with a 33–yard pass to Walters, extending the lead to 20–0.
The Skyhawks extended their lead later in the quarter. After a Laurence Manning punt, Hammond only needed two plays to find the end zone once more. A 14–yard run by Cotter, set up an 18–yard pass from Nidiffer to Gavin Fawcett for the score. The extra point extended the lead to 27–0.
Hammond put up one more score before the half was over. After another turnover on downs by Laurence Manning, the Skyhawks had the ball inside their own 18–yard line. However, head coach Eric Kimrey had the perfect play drawn up for this situation. Nidiffer connected with Walters around midfield, and Walters did the rest of the work dashing to the end zone for an 82–yard score to give the Skyhawks a 34–0 lead at halftime.
In the third quarter, Nidiffer produced one more scoring drive. After a Laurence Manning punt, the Skyhawks had the ball at their own 15–yard line. This drive, unlike the other scoring drives, relied heavily on the running game. Cotter and George led the way for Hammond. Cotter ran for 38 yards on four carries, and George ran for 30 yards on two carries, moving the ball inside the Laurence Manning 10–yard line. Nidiffer finished this drive off like he did all the others, through the air with a seven–yard touchdown pass to Walters. The missed extra point kept the score at 40–0.
Laurence Manning got on the score board in the fourth quarter when Patrick Anderson connected with Ryan Anderson for a nine–yard touchdown pass. The extra point was missed making the final score 40–6.
