Cavaliers beat Dutch Fork to get fourth win in a row

Don’t look now, but the Richland Northeast Cavaliers are on the march. The Cavaliers started the season 0–4, but have since won their fourth in a row with a 24–19 victory over the visiting Dutch Fork Silver Foxes Friday, October 16. The Cavaliers now stand 4–0 in Region V–4A play with home games remaining against North Augusta and Orangeburg Wilkinson and a road trip to powerhouse Irmo sandwiched in between.

The defenses ruled the first quarter at Harry Parone Stadium. The Silver Foxes reached midfield twice, but were forced to punt both times. The Cavaliers’ first possession ended in a three– and–out, but, with 4:44 remaining in the first quarter, quarterback Kersean Wilson got the Richland Northeast offense moving with the help of La’Derrick Cohens.

Starting at their own 38–yard line, the Cavaliers marched to the Dutch Fork 9–yard line. The drive stalled after a false start, but Daniel Passament booted a field goal to give Richland Northeast a 3–0 lead with 10:08 remaining in the second quarter.

The Silver Foxes (2–6, 1–3) responded with Josh Bodner’s 30–yard kick–off return to the Richland Northeast 46– yard line. Two plays later, they were at the 13–yard line, but RNE defensive lineman Donovan Belton caught Chris Kohn in the backfield for a 7–yard loss. The Foxes settled for a field goal attempt, but it was blocked.

The Cavaliers then turned to Wilson and Cohens again. Wilson ran six times for 64 yards, and Cohens got three carries for 26 yards, which included a 14–yard touchdown scamper that gave Richland Northeast a 10–0 lead with 3:07 remaining in the half.

The Silver Foxes closed the half with a seven play, 67–yard drive. Brice Green completed three passes for 63 yards including a 47–yard completion to Caulie George that set–up Dutch Fork at the Cavalier 6–yard line.

Three plays later, Kohn stiff–armed RNE leading tackler Ryan Quarles on his way to the end zone. The extra point made it 10–7 going into halftime.

After an RNE punt to start the third quarter, the Silver Foxes marched 70 yards in just under four minutes to the Cavalier 5–yard line. The RNE defense forced a fourth down, but Green found C.J. Cannon on a fade to the right side of the end zone to give Dutch Fork a 13–10 lead. The extra point was missed.

The Silver Foxes appeared to have all the momentum when they forced the Cavaliers to punt on their next possession, but a mishandled ball on the return allowed the Cavaliers to recover a fumble at the Dutch Fork 43–yard line.

With mixture of runs from Wilson and Darius Paulk , the Cavaliers drove to the Dutch Fork 24–yard line. Paulk then scooted the final 24 yards for the touchdown. Passament’s extra point put the Cavaliers back on top 17–13 with 42 seconds remaining in the third quarter.

The Cavalier defense then held Dutch Fork to negative 6 yards on its next possession, and the Cavalier offense put together a 71–yard drive capped off by Wilson’s 1–yard run to give Richland Northeast a 24–13 lead with 5:33 remaining in the game.

The Silver Foxes did not quit and took the ball from their own 46–yard line to the RNE 15–yard line. A pass interference call got them to the 7–yard line. Green then scrambled for the touchdown with 3:02 remaining, but the two point attempt failed.

The Cavaliers then ran out the clock for the victory.

Wilson finished with 143 total yards and a touchdown; 116 came on the ground. Cohens added 73 yards and a touchdown for Richland ortheast.

Brice Green led Dutch Fork with 100 yards rushing and a touchdown to go with 129 yards passing and a touchdown.
