Melrose Heights neighbors plan to run for office
The Melrose Heights Neighborhood Association met Monday October 12. Joseph Azar, a local business man, announced that he is running for Mayor of Columbia. He claims that he wants to build up the business in Columbia and to help take care of the employees of the city, stating that some are unhappy for their pay being cut as well as having some unpaid holidays. Azar says two words that sum up his campaign are “communication and cooperation.”
Seth Rose, a prosecutor for Richland County, announced he is running for a seat in the County Council as a Democrat. The Democratic Primary is June 8, 2010. He states he is concerned by the rise in crime as well as the unemployment rate in Richland County. He promises to work tirelessly to help stop wasteful spending as well as improve the quality of life in Richland County.
Rose also spoke on a part of the judicial system he feels is underused. He says too often he hears concerns from residents of Richland County about a suspect arrested and two days later is on the street. Rose says a way to diminish the concern for residents is if you are a victim of the crime, show up for the bond hearing of that suspect. He says to make sure the judge knows you are concerned for your safety if the suspect is on the street, if you feel this way as a victim. Another way to help is to make sure the police know who all the possible witnesses of the crime may be.
Steven Reeves, an officer with the Richland County Police Department, provided tips that may be helpful with Halloween only being a couple of weeks away.
• Children should go trick or treating with an adult or older sibling.
• Stay in your neighborhood and only go to homes you are familiar with.
• Carry a flashlight or some type of illuminating device.
• Parents should check all candy the child collects before the child eats it.
• Do not accept anything from anyone in a vehicle.
