George Campsen ran for 102 yards and two scores, and Hudson Worthy threw for two touchdowns and ran for another as the Porter– Gaud Cyclones ruined Homecoming for Cardinal Newman, 35–7, on Friday, October 2.
Things began ominously for the Cardinals (1–4) as a bad exchange between quarterback Tommy Winterstein and running back Joey DeAngelis resulted in a fumble recovered by the Cyclones at the Cardinal 26–yard line. But the Cardinal defense came up big, sacking Worthy twice on the ensuing drive and forcing a punt from the Cyclones. Cardinal Newman was then forced to punt, and Galen Givens–Rowlin returned the kick 72 yards before being chased down from behind at the 1 by Pennington Nieri. Worthy scored on the next play to give the Cyclones a 7–0 lead.

The Cardinals were forced to punt on each of their next four possessions, and Porter Gaud (4–2) scored a touchdown after each one. Campsen scored on a 28– yard run to make it 14–0. Then Worthy threw a 14– yard touchdown pass to Stanton Seckinger on the next drive to build the lead to 21–0.
After the next punt, Campsen broke free for a 45–yard score on the next play. Then, after the Cardinals punted one more time, Worthy found Taylor Barber on the first play for a 44–yard touchdown pass. Porter– Gaud led 35–0 going into halftime.
The Cardinals finally got on the board midway through the fourth quarter when DeAngelis scored from 16 yards out. DeAngelis led the Cardinal offense with 156 yards rushing on 23 carries.
At halftime, Homecoming festivities were held, and senior Rian Tompkins was named Homecoming Queen. Senior Nazley Wilson was named Miss Sweetheart.
