Smart idea for seniors

By Pam Edwards

The Monday Luncheon Club will meet October 26, 12:15 pm at Nonnah’s, 930 Gervais Street.

Dean Poole, MSW, PhD, Dean, College of Social Work at USC, will present information about “Senior Smart,” a program designed to help senior citizens live independently and safely. “Smart” applies pioneering, real– world solutions to meet immediate and long–term needs.

“Smart” components include “Smart Wheels,” to help seniors drive safely, “Smart Brain” to promote brain health while preventing cognitive decline, and “Smart Home” which enables older adults to stay in their own homes, through the use of new technologies and community services.

“Senior Smart,” led by the director for the Division of Geriatrics at South Carolina’s School of Medicine, Dr. Paul Eleazer, and a team of multidisciplinary experts, requires $20 million in funding. The center has received a commitment of $5 million in funding from the S.C. Legislature that must be matched by private, federal, or municipal funding.

The University of S.C. is in partnership with Palmetto Health, Clemson University, Health Sciences South Carolina, and other organizations.

Poole states “Senior Smart” is mobilizing top experts in geriatric medicine, engineering, neuroscience, public health, and social work to help seniors live independently and safely.
