3rd Annual Smith Memorial Tournament benefits Rally for the Cure campaign
B–C’s Sarah Johnson tees off at last year’s Smith Memorial Tournament.
Timberlake Country Club will be the site for the 3rd Annual Smith Memorial Tournament on Monday, October 5.
A 2 pm shotgun start will bring together an anticipated field of 14 high school girls golf teams from across the state.
The third–year event’s field will return to the site of the original tournament, Timberlake Country Club. In the two years since Timberlake served as host course, the number of teams participating has more than doubled. The field is the strongest to date. To boot, the tournament continues to fulfill the goals that B–C’s coach Roger Smith originally intended. Smith states, “My parents were the biggest supporters of the B–C golf program and this is a way to honor their memory and continue to thank them for their support.” In addition to honoring the memory of his parents, the tournament accomplishes other positives at the same time.
“The tournament does that by providing an opportunity to raise young ladies awareness of breast cancer, give additional golf tournament experience to high school girls golf programs, and we have a lot of fun during the tournament.”
Not only are prizes given for the top two golf teams and individuals, but awards for closest to the pin, long drive, and the best pink outfit are given.
All players, coaches and volunteers are encouraged to wear pink for the day.
One hundred percent of the team entry fees will go to the Rally for the Cure Campaign as well as any additional donations that are collected.
Evans Day, club professional at TimberlakeCountry Club, is excited to have the event return to the course. “It is a great cause. We have a great membership here and some of them are cancer survivors.”
2009 schools include Airport, Brookland–Cayce, Chapin, Clover, Dreher, Emerald, Fort Dorchester, Lexington, Dutch Fork, South Aiken, Spring Valley, Strom Thurmond, and Wade Hampton.
