DeAngelis runs wild, but Bishops win
|
The Cardinals (0- 3) came out fired up on defense, forcing and recovering a fumble on the game's first possession. But they were unable to score, turning the ball over on downs. After a Bishop England punt, the Cardinals drove 53 yards to set up a field goal attempt, but Pennington Nieri's kick was blocked.
The Bishops (1- 3) then drove 63 yards for their own field goal attempt, but the Cardinals blocked Brenden Costa's kick as well. The Cardinals took over at their own 19 and immediately gave the ball back to Bishop England as DeAngelis did not get a grasp on the handoff and fumbled. Three plays later, Cameron Swails scored from five yards out to give the Bishops a 7- 0 lead.

Then, after the Cardinals punted, Andrew Bunch took the handoff and went 61 yards to put the Bishops up 21- 7 at the half.
The Cardinals did not back down, however, as they took the second-half kickoff and drove 80 yards on 17 plays, most of them runs by DeAngelis, to get back into the game at 21- 14. Stiles Monteith finished off the drive with a one- yard run. Bishop England ran the subsequent kickoff back to the Cardinal 37, but turned the ball over on downs at the Cardinal 20 near the end of the third quarter.
As the fourth quarter began, the Cardinals were looking for the tying score, but DeAngelis was stripped of the ball on a nice play by Swails, who returned it to the Cardinal 21. Two plays later, Bunch found the end zone again for the final points of the game.
Behind DeAngelis' running, the Cardinals outgained the Bishops, 323 yards to 252. Monteith added 33 yards to go with his touchdown. For the Bishops, Bunch had 95 yards and the two touchdowns, and quarterback Mikell Fosberry threw for 96 key yards on 6- 11 passing, all but one of the passes going for a first down.
Cardinal Newman goes on the road to Florence Christian on Friday, September 18.
