Lee Blake Lomas

On an icy morning, February 29, 1920, the last of nine children was born to the late John Stack Lomas and Mable Hollis Lomas. His name was Lee Blake Lomas, and he lived a full life of 891/2 years in the Fair Lawn Community. From birth he was a member of Pisgah Methodist Church. In 1965, he became a charter member of Fair Lawn UMC.

On December 28, 1940, he was married to his high school sweetheart, Mildred Stevenson. This marriage continued for 68 years and from it came five children: Christie (Carolyn), Steve (Marilyn), Alida Glenn (William) Plunkett, Edwin (Debra), and Wade (Carla), nine grandchildren and four great- grandchildren. He is survived by all except Steve and their spouses.

Mr. Lomas expressed his responsibility to God and his community by service and membership not only to his church but also the North Columbia Optimist Club, the William Bratton Camp of the Sons of the Confederate Veterans, The American Bible Society, Methodist Men, and he also sang in the choir.

On Sunday morning, September 6, 2009, he departed this life and was reunited with his parents; brothers: John, Ellington, Carlisle, and Bennett; his sisters: Addie, Laurie, Caroline, Myrtis, and Patra; and his son, Steve.

The Lomas family wishes to express gratitude to the staff of Tri- County Hospice for their very kind and compassionate care of Mr. Lomas during his sickness. A celebration of life for L. Blake Lomas, 89, of Columbia, was held at 11 am, Wednesday, September 9, 2009, at Fair Lawn United Methodist Church with The Rev. Donald R. Brown and The Rev. L. Carroll Pope officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery. The family received friends Tuesday evening from 6 pm until 8 pm at Shives Funeral Home, 5202 Colonial Drive, Columbia.
