Mr. and Mrs. William Jones Bates Jr. announce the engagement of their daughter, Susan Elliott Bates, to Paul Anderson Cooper II. The bride- elect is the granddaughter of Mrs. Robert Henry Dangerfield and the late Mr. Dangerfield of Pinopolis, South Carolina. Her paternal grandparents are Mrs. Martin Luther Ackerman and the late Mr. William Jones Bates of Moncks Corner, South Carolina. She graduated from Porter- Gaud School in Charleston, South Carolina and Wofford College with a BA degree.

The bridegroom- elect is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Haselden Cooper Jr. His maternal grandparents are the late Mr. and Mrs. John Sheppard Nicholson. His paternal grandparents are the late Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Haselden Cooper. The bridegroom- elect graduated from Heathwood Hall Episcopal School and the University of South Carolina with a BA degree and the Charleston School of Law with Juris Doctorate.

The couple is planning an October wedding at First Presbyterian Church in Charleston, South Carolina.
