Mopeds are a danger to our roadways
Why does our state of South Carolina allow any motorized vehicle to be operated on our roads and highways without requirement of a driver's license, tag, and insurance? For the rest of the registered motorists this is grossly unfair. Not only does this rider make a mockery of the licensing and the tax system, but also exposes the traveling public to the dangers of the rider's substance abuse history.
To those who argue that more power for mopeds is needed, I would answer, "why not buy a motorcycle?" The reason this is not agreeable to all is the fact that a motorcycle requires the rider to have a driver's license, tag, and insurance.
Bottom line, if a rider cannot provide drivers license, tag, and insurance; you have no right to operate a motorized vehicle on public roads.
I have a bias on this issue. My brother died due to the actions of an impaired moped rider. Both the moped rider and my brother paid with their lives for this error in judgment. My brother was an experienced motorcycle rider who wore full protection, preached motorcycle rider protection, and had a driver's license (with motorcycle endorsement), tag, and insurance. He was a productive contributor to our society whose life was taken by someone who did not have the above.
