The South Carolina Philharmonic launches Morihiko 2.0, its 2009/2010 season, with "All in a Family" on Saturday, September 12 at 7:30 pm in the Koger Center.

Music Director Morihiko Nakahara is using the backdrop of football season to showcase the components of his team of musicians, presenting works during the first half of the concert featuring each distinct family of instruments that make up the orchestra.

The concert opens with

Rossini's La gazza ladra Overture

before the survey of sections begins with the French composer

Paul Dukas' bold Fanfare to La

Perí, which puts the brass section in the spotlight. The woodwinds and horns are next up, taking the lead in Richard

Strauss' Serenade in E-flat Major,

written when the composer was just 17.

Lastly, strings get their due in Polish composer Wojciech Kilar's Orawa . Kilar is best

known for his scores of The

Pianist (2002) and Bram Stoker's

Dracula (1992). Orawa, written in 1988, is solely a string piece and has a crisp, fast pace.

The last half of the concert is the Brahms Fourth Symphony,

Nakahara's favorite symphony by his favorite composer. The SCP last performed the work in 1997.

"All in a Family" is the first of seven concerts in the Masterworks Series for the new season. With Morihiko 2.0 Premium Edition, the SCP continues to redefine what the symphonic experience can be. Maestro Nakahara's second season with the orchestra has the classic, the contemporary, the standard, and the eclectic to whet the appetites of all music lovers.
