Melrose Heights Neighborhood Association learns about police work and green courses

The Melrose Heights Neighborhood Association met on Monday August 10. Deputy Kevin Stegall of the Richland County Sheriff's Department said that the Citizens Policy Academy, a 12 week program helping citizens learn more about the work that the police in Columbia do, will be held in October.

Bridget Tripp, a representative from Repower America, spoke on the Waxman- Markey Bill that passed the house and will go to the Senate in September. The Waxman- Markey bill deals with energy efficiency and could provide green jobs to Columbians.

Midlands Techical College offers classes both on campus and online such as Green Building for Contracting, Green Sustainability- Carbon Strategies, and Green- Sustainability 101. If interested, go to www.midlandstech. edu, click on the course catalog, and click on the icon that says "Green" and it will bring up a list of the classes that are offered. The cost for the sustainability class is $300 with costs for other classes varying.

The next Melrose Heights meeting will be held in September.
