Mignon Clyburn (right), daughter of Congressman James Clyburn, was sworn in as the first African American and South Carolinian and female to be commissioner of the Federal Communications Commission. The oath was administered by Judge Matthew Perry (right) at the Matthew Perry Courthouse in Columbia. Mignon spent 14 years as publisher and editor of a weekly newspaper even delivering the newspapers by herself. For 11 years, Mignon was a state public service commissioner. She says she will use her past experience to help the FCC in its efforts to get internet service to every American. President Obama appointed her hoping she will bring this spirit to her new job. Contributed by Forest Acres Rotary Club On Sunday, August 3, the Rotary Club of Forest Acres purchased shoes for 40 students of Hyatt Park and Forest Heights elementary schools. The project called Happy Feet is designed to provide new shoes for the school year of selected students. The event took place at the Payless Shoes store in the East Forest Plaza Shopping Center located on Forest Drive.
