Dr. George Washington Brunson

Funeral service for Dr. George Washington Brunson, 92, of Columbia, was held 11 am, Tuesday, July 28, 2009, at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, Averyt Hall (corner of Marion and Gervais Streets), with burial in Elmwood Cemetery. The family received friends from 5 until 7 p.m. Monday, July 27, 2009, at the home of Frank Brunson. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel is assisting the family.

Dr. Brunson died Saturday, July 25, 2009, at S.C. Episcopal Home at Still Hopes. Born in Camden, S.C., Dr. Brunson was the son of the late George Washington Brunson and Harriet Shannon Brunson. He served during WWII and achieved the rank of major in the Army Air Corp as a medical flight surgeon. A retired radiologist and former chief of staff at Richland Memorial Hospital, he was a fellow in the American Colleges of Radiology and Chest Physicians. Dr. Brunson had memberships in the Columbia Medical Society, the S.C. Medical Association and the American Medical Association. He was a member of the SAE Fraternity at USC and the AKK Fraternity at the Medical College of S.C., the Columbia Sertoma Club, Forest Lake Club, the Columbia Ball, the Quadrille Club, and the St. Andrews Society. He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral.

Surviving are his two sons, George W. Brunson Jr. and Frank J. Brunson ( JoAnn), both of Columbia; three daughters, Louise B. Spong (Tommy) of Columbia, Francie B. Whiteside (Stuart) of Mt.

Pleasant and Harriet

B. Kneece (Bobby) of Columbia; 13 grandchildren and one great- granddaughter.

Dr. Brunson was predeceased by his wife, Frances Earle Jones Brunson.

The family wishes to express their deep appreciation for the exceptional care of Dr. Brunson during his illness. Special thanks to Estelle Clark, Robin Clark, Lorraine Cooper, and the staff at Palmetto Health Hospice.
