Rotary Club of Spring Valley awards scholarships

Seven area Richland District 2 high school seniors were awarded a $1,000 scholarship from the Rotary Club of Spring Valley. The scholarships were presented at the club's meeting on May 21 to the following students: Ashley Cohen- Burnell from Richland Northeast High School, who plans to attend the University of South Carolina and major in Business; three students from Ridgeview High School including Erin McAboy, who plans to attend the University of South Carolina and major in nursing; Tyronda Gaskins, who plans to attend Winthrop and major in business administration; and Michelle Feggans, who plans to attend the University of South Carolina and major in exercise science; and three students from Spring Valley High School including Ricardo Redd, who plans to attend Atlanta Metropolitan College and major in music business management, Whitney Barr, who plans to attend Spelman College and major in English; and Brandon Morris, who plans to attend the University of South Carolina and major in criminal justice.

Awards were based on the students' academics, extracurricular involvement, financial need, and an interview. Selections were made by members of the club's scholarship committee. The club provides applications to high school guidance counselors in February and selections are made annually in April. Spring Valley Rotary has been awarding these scholarships for the past 21 years.

The Rotary Club of Spring Valley was founded in 1978 and has over 100 members dedicated to implementing the ideals of Rotary in Northeast Columbia and its surrounding areas.
