Shandon 30th Annual Youth Mission Project underway
     Photo by Jim Covington From Shandon United Methodist Church In 1980, members of Shandon United Methodist Church began to invest and support a hands- on experience for youth to serve in Christian mission. On July 19, the congregation sent forth a team of 124 persons including youth and counselors for the 30th Annual Youth Mission Project. A caravan of buses, vans, trucks, and trailers loaded with sleeping bags, tools, and ladders traveled to Hollywood, S.C., south of Charleston. Over the next week, the group repaired homes, built relationships, and shared hope and Christian faith with every nail that was hammered and every smile shared.

Cayce Speed Enforcement Unit continuing efforts
      The City of Cayce is continuing its efforts with the recently implemented Traffic Speed Enforcement Unit. As a reminder, one of the unit's recent accomplishments was sending its officers to the "Alive at 25" course where they received certification and are now qualified as instructors for the class.

Explorers to study Chile weather
      Dr. Brian Helmuth, professor of marine ecology at USC, and John Hodge, coastal geologist and environmental attorney with Haynesworth- Sinkler- Boyd Law Firm have received an expeditionary flag from The Explorers Club for research they are doing in Chile this month.

Genesis seeks to make SC the next Hollywood
      When Cliff Springs was growing up around Charleston, he wanted to make movies. He didn't want to be a movie star or celebrity. He wanted to create movies - write a script, shoot some footage, edit the results into a story. That's what he wanted to do. Right now he is real close to getting it done.

Columbia East point Academy hopes to open in 2010
      In February 2009, a consensus was built by the members and leaders of Columbia's Chinese community that South Carolina should have a special charter school based upon a comprehensive approach to Chinese language and cultural education. Columbia East Point Academy (CEPA) is a planned charter school with a Chinese immersion program.
