It's not a criticism; It's an observation
Today Show, the gang offered another one of those hard hitting journalistic pieces that are designed to inform the public, improve ratings, and scare the crap out of everyone so they will stay inside and watch TV for more warnings about the scary things in this world.
One of the NBC reporters, a young woman, (aren't they all?) told how an easy to obtain blank key can be used to break into nearly every house in America. To demonstrate, the reporter accompanied this official looking man into the field. He was either a retired cop or reformed criminal.
The man took this magic key he said can be purchased anywhere, inserted it into the door's dead bolt lock, and struck it with an odd looking hard rubber hammer. The tumblers in the lock miraculously dropped into place, the key turned, the door opened, and the reporter was amazed.
She agreed to let the man try her own front door. I'm assuming she had her house cleaned in case he was successful. Her door easily swung open to her panicked cries. The feature ended with Matt showing a look of concern and several locks available that aren't susceptible to the magic key.
What no one mentioned was that both front doors used in the demonstration had glass panes, and the guy was holding a hammer. Let me write this very slowly so those of you in need of the information can be sure not to miss it. It is easy to break into someone's home.
If you live in a neighborhood where everyone is gone during the day or your house has a blind spot where a burglar can work in seclusion, you are easy prey.
If your home has any wooden doors, first floor windows, or a garage, you are a sitting duck. You can buy all the magic door locks your stimulus money will pay for and still not be sure that burglars won't break in.
But odds are this won't happen unless you live in a really poor neighborhood the burglars are familiar with. And then they don't think you have anything worth stealing. We live in the safest era in the history of the world. Quit worrying so much.
In the next segment, the Today Show staff told us that some bottled water wasn't necessarily any better than what comes out of the tap. Several brands come from municipal water supplies. The kicker is this; not only is the vast number of plastic bottles choking garbage dumps worldwide and people pay more for bottled water than gas; there are safeguards on most municipal water systems and none on bottled water.
Matt ended the segment by showing this cute Evian commercial featuring babies skating and jumping over each other. He exposed how he really feels about people who drink bottled water and possibly people who regularly
watch the Today
Show by reminding people that those weren't real babies flying around on skates and jumping over one another. The images were computer generated with baby heads attached for effect. I wonder how many people are relieved he cleared that up.
