Woodrow Wilson Family Home Rehabilitation Workshop Series

Woodrow Wilson Family Home Woodrow Wilson Family Home Architects, contractors, and Historic Columbia Foundation staff will provide valuable insight on the rehabilitation work at the Woodrow Wilson Family Home during workshops scheduled from July- August. Participants will get hands- on training and exclusive site reviews illustrating the rehabilitation process as professional staff presents terminology, tools, materials, best practices, and contact information on vendors who carry the materials needed for these projects. The first workshop will be held on Saturday, July 18. August workshops will be held on Saturday, August 8 and Saturday, August 29. All workshops are 9 am- 11:30 am. A reception and progress update on September 23 will conclude the workshop series.

July 18 Window Restoration

General contractor Huss, Inc. will be on site to discuss the problems and concerns with windows found in older homes. Participants will learn how to recognize problems, analyze damage, and develop a plan on how to repair and maintain windows in an effort to sustain the integrity of a historic home.

August 8 Mending Masonry

Huss Inc. and Dan Elswick of the South Carolina Preservation Office, will address the challenges in working with historic masonry. Participants will learn how to recognize failures caused by inappropriate modern mixes, while learning proper conservation, stabilization and restoration techniques.

August 29 Final Touches

Project architects John Milner Associates, Inc. ( JMA) will review traditional paint composition and color as well as information about the design influences of Andrew Jackson Downing in connection to the Wilson Family Home. Further topics will include paint failure, removal techniques, lead paint, caulking and hardware restoration practices and demonstrations.

September 23 Progress Update and Reception, 5:30 pm- 7 pm, Woodrow Wilson Home, 1705 Hampton Street

Historic Columbia Foundation will host a reception to celebrate the final stages of Phase I. Historic Columbia Foundation, JMA, and Huss staff will provide updates and a review of the work completed during the first phase of the rehabilitation process. Guests can watch video clips, view photos of the Wilson Family Home, and take a brief tour of the site.
