South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford held a press conference at the State House Wednesday afternoon to tell the camera- crowded hall he was guilty of adultery.

He related his conversation with Gina Smith, State House reporter for The State, which was when he was at the Atlanta airport upon his return from Argentina. He apologized to Smith for not being altogether forthcoming. At the press conference, he was forthcoming.

He announced his resignation as chairman of the Republican Governors Association, and then he delved into his illicit activities for the past year.

His affair was with a woman of a long- term acquaintance, several years, but he was hoping his one- year affair could somehow still allow him forgiveness from his wife Jenny and reconciliation with his four boys.

Questions from the crush of reporters included, "Governor, will you resign?" To which he replied, "No."
