Edisto Discovery Park and Neighborhood Center opens in Rosewood
Edisto Discovery Park and Neighborhood Center The Rosewood Community Council held a brief meeting on Thursday June 18. Rebecca Munnerlyn gave an update on Interim Measures, a temporary measure that allows limited restrictions on changes to the Rosewood Area. She said the issue is scheduled to go in front of City Council July 15 at 10 am. Interim Measures includes changes, such as tearing down or making significant repairs to a house 50 years old or older. Changes must go in front of the Design Development Review Commission before they can happen if Interim Measures passes.
Munnerlyn also gave an update on the process that is underway for a new skate park that is being built in Columbia. The city had to reopen the bidding process due to issues with the original process. Munnerlyn says that the winning bidder should be announced soon. The city of Columbia has confirmed that they are behind a $500,000 commitment to fund the project.
The Edisto Discovery Park and Neighborhood Center will open Saturday, June 27, 2009. The dedication ceremony is at 10 am and the celebration is from 11 am- 2 pm. Edisto Discovery Park is located at 1914 Wiley Street in the Rosewood area. There will be tours, music and refreshments, clowns, face painting, balloon animals, fossil digs, games, hands- on activities, and demonstrations of outdoor fitness equipment. The splash pad opens at 3 pm. The park offers a splash pad with palm tree sprinklers, outdoor track for jogging and walking, outdoor fitness equipment, outdoor basketball court, playground, fossil dig area, and a multi- purpose facility for classes, meetings, programs, and celebrations.
