Officer warns of scams and burglaries in the South Kilbourne neighborhood
Victor ia Chien reported on a scam in Columbia at the South Kilbourne Neighborhood Association Thursday June 4. Local residents have complained of a man who has been coming by houses posing as a representative of Pinnacle Security. This man has no business card and no other forms of identification, other than the contract he is trying to get home owners to sign. He says he is from the area and is offering an upgrade in home owners' security systems.
Officer Jennifer Jordan with the Columbia Police Department says if you notice anything suspicious call the police department right away.
Officer Jordan reported that two burglaries were reported on South Kilbourne Street. Both burglaries were house break- ins. No suspects were mentioned in either case.
Pam Greenlaw, a representative of the Gills Creek Watershed Association said that liter, pet waste, and fertilizer are harming the streams and rivers in Columbia. She says the Gills Creek Watershed Association's vision is to create liter free waterways, improve the water quality, create fully functioning stream corridors, and reduce sedimentation in the lakes.
Greenlaw laid out ways to bring this vision to realization.
• Identify the source of the deterioration
• Educate the public on the deterioration and how to prevent it.
• Monitor to make sure the water quality continues to improve.
This process is meant to increase community recreation in the waterways. Greenway says the best way to improve the quality of water is for citizens to get involved. Contact Jessica Artz, the program poordinator at 727-6326 or Jartz@environ. sc.edu.
The South Kilbourne Neighborhood Association will meet again in September.
