Burnside Elementary School volunteers honored
Army drill sergeants have a reputation as tough leaders dedicated to training our nation's newest troops. But in the classrooms at Burnside Elementary, the drill sergeants in Fort Jackson's 1st Battalion, 13th Infantry Regiment have become outstanding mentors who have helped to improve student reading and behavior.
Because of the impact the soldiers have made in the lives of the students at Burnside, the SC Association for Volunteer Administration (SCAVA) has selected the 1st Battalion to receive the South Carolina Governor's Volunteer Group Award. The official presentation was made May 4, at the Richland County Public Library.
Twice a week for three hours, about 15 soldiers in Ft. Jackson's Adopt- a- School Program visit Burnside classrooms to read, have lunch, or spend recess with students. The soldiers also hosted an on- base bowling activity for the children and gave them the opportunity to have lunch in an Army mess hall.
The Governor's Volunteer Group Award is given annually to an organization that has been instrumental in designing or sponsoring a program or project to benefit the community and individual needs and, in doing so, has demonstrated extraordinary initiative and commitment.
