Local swimmers attend national meet
      Local swimmers excelled at the 7th Annual National Black Heritage Championship Swim Meet on Memorial Day weekend in Cary, North Carolina. The competitors also had the chance to meet 2008 Olympic gold medalist Cullen Jones and 2004 Olympic silver medalist Maritza Correia.

Richland One program named Obesity Prevention Champion
      Richland One's Office of Extended- Day Programs, which provides after- school and other services, has been named Palmetto Health's Champion of Obesity Prevention. Included with that honor is a check for $250 that will be used to support or improve the program.

But in the classrooms at Burnside Elementary, the drill sergeants in Fort Jackson's 1st Battalion, 13th Infantry Regiment have become outstanding mentors who have helped to improve student reading and behavior.

International Welcome Center closed for summer
      Richland One's International Welcome Center closed for the summer Friday, May 29. It will reopen for the 2009- 2010 school year Monday, August 3. Hours will be 8 am to noon. The center, which helps ease the transition for international students and families that are new to the district, is housed at A.C. Moore Elementary School, 333 Etiwan Avenue.

      Three Richland One high school seniors have been named winners in the 45th annual National Achievement Scholarship competition putting them in an elite group. They are among the 22 South Carolina students and 800 nationwide to achieve this prestigious honor.
