Bearcat pitcher Chandler Terrapin gave up one hit and no runs in the first six innings, and Marquitta Wilson went 2- for- 3 with an RBI and a run to go with a stellar defensive effort to lead Brookland- Cayce over the visiting J.L. Mann Patriots 3- 1 in game two of the best of three class 3A softball state championship series. Staving off elimination for the fifth time in this year's playoffs, the Bearcats evened the series at 1- 1 and played for it all Friday, May 22 at Lander University, the designated neutral site.

Terrapin was masterful from the start. She faced no more than three Patriot batters per inning up until the fourth inning. Of course, she had some help from her teammates. Wilson's unassisted double play from her second base position ended the first inning, and right fielder Brooke Lucas gunned down J.L. Mann's Britney Freeman at home to end the second inning.

Terrapin started the bottom half of the first with a double to the right center field gap. M.C. Smith followed with a walk, then Jury hit Alex White with a pitch to load the bases. A batter later, Wilson bounced a single to center field scoring Ciara Mathews who was pinch running for Terrapin. With the bases still loaded, Jury was able to strike out the next two batters to end the inning.

The Patriots got their first hit in the fourth inning when Hannah Pace singled to center field with two outs. Jury followed with a walk, but B- C shortstop Casey Corbitt gobbled up Olivia Zielinski's ground ball and threw pinch runner Tori Sims out at third base to end the threat. The Bearcats threatened in the fourth as well, but stranded runners at second and third base.

Terrapin struck out two of three batters to quickly end the Patriot's half off the fifth inning, but the Bearcats touched up Jury in their half. White and Ashlyn Hicks each drilled line drives to right center field, but J.L. Mann's Lindsey Waters was able to run both shots down diving to make the second grab.

Corbitt then hit a two- strike pitch that resulted in the equivalent of a full swing bunt. Pace scooped up the ball from her catcher's position and tried unsuccessfully to throw out Corbitt. Meanwhile, Wilson sprinted home barely beating the throw back from first base and colliding with Pace at home plate. Pace dropped the ball and lay on the ground in obvious pain. In the confusion and using smart base running, Corbitt ran all the way to third. She then scored on Caroline Reid's single down the third base line.

Both teams went three up, three down in the sixth. Terrapin rolled for the Bearcats. Pace relieved Jury for J.L. Mann and shut down the Bearcats with a nasty mix of fastballs and change ups.

The Patriots started the seventh inning with a single to center field from Pace. Then, in what may have been the play of the game, Wilson dove to her right snagging a line drive and a sure hit away from Jury.

Terrapin then struck out Katie Billingsley, but Jill Shepherd followed with a single to center field that scored Freeman and put the tying run at first base. However, Terrapin struck out the next batter to end the game and keep the Bearcats alive once again.
