Patriots three- run ninth ends Bearcats' title hopes
Umpires' disputed calls may have lead to Brookland- Cayce's demise.
      The J.L. Mann Patriots scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning to defeat the Brookland- Cayce Bearcats 5- 2 in the final game of the best of three 3A state championship softball series. The game was held at the neutral site of Lander University and marred by controversy that left both sides fuming at times.

Fear the Terrapin
Bearcats battle back; take game 2 to even series with J.L. Mann.
      Bearcat pitcher Chandler Terrapin gave up one hit and no runs in the first six innings, and Marquitta Wilson went 2- for- 3 with an RBI and a run to go with a stellar defensive effort to lead Brookland- Cayce over the visiting J.L. Mann Patriots 3- 1 in game two of the best of three class 3A softball state championship series.

Cullum putts to P.C.
      Burdette "Det" Cullum worked as a volunteer at the 2006 US Open at Winged Foot, one of the famed golf courses in the world. Det, which is short for Burdette, was a gawky junior high kid who was impressed by the lush course, deep rough, and down to earth attitudes of most of the PGA players.

Flora soccer players honored
      Several A.C. Flora varsity soccer players received special awards at the annual Spring Sports Awards Banquet held Wednesday, May 20, at Crayton Middle School. Lee Knudsen, Morgan Mitchell, Alex Richards, and Cameron Wegrzyn were named All- Region players in boys soccer for 2009.

Castles wins top SCISA student- athlete award
      On Friday, May 15, 2009, Hammond senior Mason Castles received the Bill Simpson Award for a female student- athlete. The award is the highest honor in the state for a student- athlete from the South Carolina Association of Independent Schools (SCISA).
