Eagles beat Bearcats to advance
The Brookland- Cayce Bearcats beat the Airport Eagles twice earlier in the year, but they couldn't do it a third time as the Eagles shut- out the Bearcats 2- 0 in a class 3A soccer quarter final playoff match- up at The Cage.
The Eagles appeared to be the more aggressive team early on and controlled possession. Still neither team could generate a clean shot on goal, but their were opportunities for both teams. The Eagles got an indirect kick just outside the B- C box in the ninth minute and three throw- ins toward the B- C goal that Greg Stone and the Bearcat defense denied.
In the seventh minute, a Bearcat throw- in towards the Airport goal bounced around a bit and then was cleared by the defensive combination of Andrew McKinney, Garrett Sims, and Clayton Goette. That back line seemed to deny every advance the Bearcats made, but in the 29th minute, a clearing pass was blocked by B- C and nearly found the open net.
It wasn't until the 38th minute that a seemingly harmless ball cleared by the Eagles, bounced over the B- C back line defense at midfield. An opportunistic Ivan Cervantes collected the loose ball in a full sprint and broke- away free and clear down the right side of the field. B- C goalkeeper Chris Duzan tried to cut off Cervantes, but Cervantes was able to launch a shot to the back left corner of the net to give Airport a 1- 0 lead.
The Bearcats came out very aggressive in the second half, but struggled to break through the Airport defense for a clean shot. Four corner kicks generated just one shot that was deflected out of bounds. Two other shots came from free kicks.
With time ticking away, the Bearcat attack broke down and Airport's Kobie Liscusky was able to slip a pass to Griff Sims in the 80th minute. Sims rifled a shot by Duzan to put the match away.
The Eagles went on to face South Aiken in a semifinal match the following day and lost 3- 0.
