Lady Panthers end Cardinals' championship dreams

Courtney Angotti- Smith scored three goals to lead the Pinewood Prep Lady Panthers to a 4- 1 victory over the Cardinal Newman Lady Cardinals in the SCISA AAA championship soccer match on Saturday, May 9, held at Porter- Gaud School.
Angotti- Smith started early, scoring when her corner kick in the fifth minute deflected off of Cardinal keeper Molly Rainwater's hands. Three minutes later, she blew past the defender on the left side and scorched a shot under Rainwater's dive to make the score 2- 0.

Cardinal Newman answered in the 15th minute as Sophie Cobb's free kick was headed by Julie Diroff to Alexa Barnes, who guided the ball into the net past Pinewood keeper Marisa Patton. The Lady Cardinals came close to tying the score in the 37th minute when Barnes kicked a shot off the crossbar.
Two minutes later, however, the Lady Panthers scored again as Francesca Kassing scored off a rebound in front of the Cardinal net to give Pinewood a 3- 1 lead at the half.
The second half saw Cardinal Newman intensify their pressure on the Pinewood goal, but to no avail. Maggi Campanaro sent a shot toward the Pinewood net in the 57th minute with the keeper out of position, but Kimrey Angotti- Smith was able to block the shot with her shoulder.
Courtney Angotti- Smith then scored her third goal in the 69th minute off a Cardinal turnover, a blast that went over Rainwater's outstretched hands to complete the scoring.
Cardinal Newman's Chelsea Goodwin collides with a Pinewood Prep defender. Pinewood completed their season at 23- 2, and Cardinal Newman finished at 14- 5.
