The Richland County Mosquito Control Program is preparing for the upcoming season. The program conducts surveillance on mosquito populations, treats larval breeding sites, and sprays for adult mosquitoes in densely populated areas of the county.

County residents can help reduce mosquitoes by inspecting their property for potential breeding sites and using these preventive measures: • Use personal insect repellents that contain DEET or Picaridin according to label instructions • Clear drainage ditches of debris and weeds • Pack tree holes with sand or cement • Empty, overturn or remove water- holding containers such as tires, cans, bottles, buckets, flower pots, etc. • Clean leaves and pine needles from clogged roof gutters •Keep boats drained and covered (covers should be taut) or overturned •Stock ornamental ponds with top- feeding minnows. •Maintain swimming pools properly •Change the water in pet dishes, birdbaths, and containers used to root plants at least once a week

In Richland County outside the city limits of Columbia), truck spraying for adult mosquitoes will usually be conducted between midnight and dawn; however, it is possible that spraying may be conducted earlier depending on conditions. Program personnel request that all beekeepers and persons allergic to the products resmethrin and/or permethrin please notify them at 576-2910.
