Salvation Army leader returns
Salvation Army Majors Richard and Christine Jones The concept of being truly dedicated to a cause, a movement, or an organization seems to be fading in today's job- hopping, instant- gratification- seeking culture. However, this notion does not align with the manner Major Richard L. Jones has chosen to live his life.
"I was called to serve the Lord at the age of 14 through the ministry of The Salvation Army," said Major Jones. "Thus my personal commitment is for life."
Major Richard L. Jones, 74, was recently appointed Area Coordinator at The Salvation Army of the Midlands. He and his wife, Christine, have led Salvation Army Corps in North Carolina, South Carolina, and West Virginia during the course of their extensive career. Major Jones has served The Salvation Army for more than 50 years.
During the last nine years, Major Jones served in a post retirement position in the Human Resources Department in Columbia. But when called to lead the corps here, he decided, after much prayer and wise counsel, to come out of retirement and take the reigns of the Christian non- profit organization in the Capital City. Since that time, the Major has hit the ground running with his newly appointed responsibilities and is thrilled to be serving God and the people of the Midlands in this executive role.
"I am thankful to God for the good health He has provided and for the wonderful opportunity He has given me and our fine staff to help people who have immense needs," he said.
Staff at The Salvation Army of the Midlands supports Major Jones and are glad he is at the helm. In fact, they are challenged by the spry leader's seasoned, energetic management style and increased momentum.
In addition to the support Major Jones gets from his staff, he regularly receives encouragement from family members who have also chosen to serve in the Army. His son, Gary, is the Divisional Development director for Family Stores in North and South Carolina. Gary's wife, Debbie, serves as the receptionist for the Social Services/ Administrative offices in Columbia. Gary and Debbie's son, Gary, is employed by The Salvation Army as a Resource Development director for the National Capital Division in Washington, D.C.
"I am very proud," said Major Jones, "but humbled to have our family follow in our footsteps, serving the Lord in the Army."
