The Remember When Ballroom

By Jackie Perrone

The octogenarians at Presbyterian Community of Columbia will open their ears and take a trip down Memory Lane on the evening of May 26, when Bob Knox and his Blue Serenade Orchestra play a program of Big Band Swing Music.

No doubt there will be plenty of toe- tapping and humming along as the retirees recall their evenings on the ballroom floor in the 1930s and 40s.

"Swing Night" will feature the golden melodies made famous by Glenn Miller, Artie Shaw, Benny Goodman, Kay Kyser, and many other Big Band leaders of that era.

The Blue Serenade Orchestra (remember Tommy Dorsey and "Serenade in Blue?") played for the recent 67th reunion of the Doolittle Raiders in Columbia. They will be joined by members of the Palmetto Swing Dance Association, which exists to promote swing dance with the goal of never allowing this great music and dance form to fade away.

Richard Durlach and his partner Breedlove will lead the dance demonstrations.

The Remember When Ballroom event is free and open to the public but space is limited, so a phone call is recommended to (803) 796-8700, Carol McGee or email: cmcgee@preshome.org .
