Lady Highlanders run away with second straight title

The Heathwood Hall Lady Highlanders amassed 110 points to collect their second straight SCISA track and field title Saturday, May 2 at Heathwood Hall. Hammond came in second with 92 points followed closely by Augusta Christian with 91.
Heathwood Hall senior Arayael Brandner took first place in the shot put and the discus for the second straight year and helped the 4x100 meter relay team to a third place finish. Brandner has not lost a shot put or discus event in the last two years. Her discus throw of 109- 10.5 broke the state record. Carey Roth finished first in the 800m with a time of 2:28.43 and teamed up with Brooke Grice, Ginger Hicks, and Louisa Lawton to win the 4x800m relay with a time of 10:22.41 shattering the state record by nearly 14 seconds.
Heathwood Hall's Arayael Brandner makes her record breaking discus throw at the SCISA track & field championships. Other notables included Hammond's Madison Kocher who beat her own state record (9- 10) on the pole vault with a vault of 10- 9. The next closest competitor's vault was three feet lower. Mason Castles won the 1600m for the Skyhawks with a time of 5:38.03.
On the men's side, the Wilson Hall Barons sprinted by everyone with a point total of 168. The next closest opponent, Augusta Christian, finished with 98. The Heathwood Hall Highlanders came in third with 91 points, while Hammond finished fourth with 57 points. The Ben Lippen Falcons came in eighth with 23 points.
Notables included Hammond's Aaron Walters who won the 400 meter and Cliff Ayerswho won the high jump at 6- 5. Ayers and Walters joined Ron Milhouse and Taylor Smith to win the 4x400 meter relay, and Ayers, Smith, Walters, and B.J. Bennett won the 4x1600 meter relay.
Heathwood Hall's Mac Whalen set a state record on the pole vault with a vault of 13- 1, breaking Morgan Whalen's 12- 6 record set just last weekend.
