The recently re- named Jim Hamilton & L.B. Owens Airport was the site of the airport educational tour attended by 115 students from Oak Pointe Elementary School on April 24. Palmetto Sport Aviation, EAA 242 members, Ron Shelton, Ron Johnson, and Bill Blythe along with Richland Deputy Sheriff Billy McCorkle, Pat, and Kelly Hamilton volunteered to help Airport Manager Jim Hamilton conduct the tour. The students were allowed to sit in the aircraft and helicopter cockpits under close supervision for photo sessions, to learn about flight control functions, and to ask questions. They observed SC National Guard helicopters and some airplanes arriving and departing the airport. They saw owner built airplanes under various stages of construction demonstrating the importance of teamwork, and cooperation, and the value of continuing education and hard work. Since one of the airplanes under construction is being built by the owner/pilot who happens to be a young lady the myth that girls don't build and fly airplanes was dispelled in the minds of the students. They also visited the unique SC Aviation Hall of Fame in the Airport Terminal Building, a history lesson they were unaware they had received.
