The Edisto Court Neighborhood Association
The Edisto Court Neighborhood Association met Monday April 27. Bessie Watson announced that Greenview Park will be the sight for Family Fun Day hosted by Columbia Parks and Recreation. The event will be May 2 from 10 am until 3 pm and include bounce houses, hands- on activites, games, face painting, karaoke, and officials from both the police and fire department offering advice on how to stay safe.
Watson also announced that on May 4 the City of Columbia Zoning Board will meet to discuss the interim measures issue at City Hall. Interim measures stem from a petition to preserve the historic character of the community. The measure is supported by the Edisto Courts Neighborhood.
City Hall will also be the sight for the City Council meeting on May 20 at 9 am. Among the issues discussed will be the Bagnal Property, an area of land near the Owens Field Airport. Proposals have been made to turn the property into a high density student housing complex.
Gerry Lynn Hall, a representative of Community Development as well as the Bike Columbia Task Force, discussed what the Bike Columbia Task Force does. Its mission is to make Columbia a more bicycle friendly place. Hall says that the Task Force wants to work more on safety and education especially as it pertains to motorist's behavior when encountering someone riding a bike. The task force also wants to reach out to people who ride bicycles out of necessity to help them find routes to get to and from work safely.
Hall says the task force does recognize the need for bike racks and bike lockers. She says they also recognize the need for bike lanes in places that are appropriate. "We want to use biking as a mode of transportation," Hall said.
