The Cardinal Newman Cardinals started a bit slow at home against Ben Lippen Tuesday, April 21, but came on strong to defeat the Falcons 4- 0.

The Cardinals got one goal in the eighth minute of the match when Cardinal Newman goalkeeper, Timmy Cunningham, punted a monster kick that sailed over most of the field and Ben Lippen's defense. Thomas Winstead was able to collect the pass 20 feet from the Ben Lippen goal and boot a right footer by goalkeeper, Zach Harris, to put the Cardinals up 1- 0.

The Cardinals dominated possession for the remainder of the half rattling off seven shots to Ben Lippen's one, but the Cardinals could not convert. Harris collected a couple of saves including a spectacular diving deflection of a rocket off the foot of Gabe Roldan.

The match got a bit testy when Mike Beaudoin was injured attempting to gather the ball close to Ben Lippen's goal. He limped off the field, and no foul was called. Returning to action eleven minutes later in the 22nd minute, Beaudoin collided with the Ben Lippen goalkeeper on a breakaway. Upset no foul was called again, Beaudoin was issued a yellow card for complaining at the referee.

Beaudoin was then issued a red card in the 46th minute and ejected from the game. A minute later, his father was ejected from the stands for complaining to the same referee.

After that, Cardinal Newman's offense came to life. In the 60th minute, Winstead launched an overhead pass from the left side of the field to Ben Lippen's right goal post. Mike Maracich did the rest pooching the ball to the back of the net.

Winstead struck again three minutes later with a breakaway goal that put the game out of reach at 3- 0.

Jonathan Cleary notched the final goal for Cardinal Newman with a free kick from about 20 feet outside the box. It sailed by the Ben Lippen defense and into the top right corner of the goal.
