Seniors Thomas Winstead and Michael Beaudoin each scored a goal to lead Cardinal Newman by Dutch Fork 2- 1 in boys' soccer on Monday, April 13, 2009, at Cardinal Newman.

The game, scheduled only the week prior, featured two teams with very fast- paced offenses, and it showed early. Cardinal Newman (11- 3- 1) controlled the action during most of the first half, keeping the pressure on Silver Fox senior keeper Miles Kendrick with an array of shots, many from inside the box. But Kendrick made save after save, and he got some help in the ninth minute from defender Tyler Vincent, who rushed behind Kendrick to keep a shot by Winstead from crossing the goal line.

Dutch Fork (6- 4) got its offense started off a free kick in the 33rd minute, when John Robert Taylor floated a ball into the box that Isaiah Etheredge got his head on, beating Cardinal keeper Timmy Cunningham to the short side of the goal, making the score 1- 0. The Cardinals answered in the 36th minute, when Beaudoin got his own rebound off a Kendrick save and chipped it over the keeper into a wide- open net to tie the score.

The second half was less quickly paced than the first, but both teams had ample opportunities on net. The Cardinals broke through when Talley Lattimore sent a long pass to a streaking Winstead, who beat Kendrick for the tie- breaking goal in the 51st minute. Senior Adam McJunkin had a chance to tie the score for Dutch Fork in the 64th minute, but Cunningham made the save and corralled the rebound just before the Silver Foxes could pounce on it. Kendrick kept Dutch Fork in the game in the 68th minute by making a great save on a point- blank shot by Jono Cleary and then by forcing a shot wide by Gabe Roldan. But the Silver Foxes could not get any more good chances on Cunningham, and the Cardinals walked away with the victory.
