Don't dump on us

2009-04-17 / Opinion/Crime

You told our Senators to quit dumping on South Carolina's future and they listened. Don't dump on us! The last week of March the Senate Medical Affairs Committee voted to send the Landfill Moratorium resolution to the floor and the first week of April the Senate passed it out to the House.

Despite the fact that the solid waste industry has hired over a dozen lobbyists to work against the moratorium, we, the conservation community, have prevailed thus far.

Senators have taken the first step to ensure that DHEC permits only enough landfill capacity to meet the needs of our citizens. Congratulations and a big thank you to everyone who called, wrote, or emailed your senators to stop wasting South Carolina and pass the Landfill Moratorium resolution. Your actions and the efforts of our Common Agenda partners are working. While Sen. Hutto's amendment weakened the resolution to allow the permitting process to proceed, no final permits can be issued until the existing regulations are revised. We will be working in the House to tighten up the moratorium and we need your help again! Please call or write your local House members urging them to pass the landfill resolution, S.324. No longer will we stand by and allow our state to become the nation's trash dump.
