April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month
Sexual Trauma Services of the Midlands offers victims of sexual assault layers of counseling beginning immediately after the attack
      During her four years as a clinical counselor at the Behavioral Health Center of the Midlands, Sherry Lewis began to recognize a trend among her patients. "Over the years I've noticed working with clients that a lot of them with addiction issues also had a background of sexual abuse, which was a factor in the substance abuse," Lewis said.

Denim Day
      In Italy in 1992, an 18- year- old girl was forcefully raped by her 45- year- old driving instructor. The assailant was arrested, convicted, and sentenced to jail. He appealed the sentence, and the case made its way to the Italian Supreme Court. The Supreme Court released the perpetrator and dismissed all charges.

Library hosts Log Cabin Art Guild show
     Betty Rader's painting of her grandson, John Warren Rader, won top honors last year in the Log Cabin Art Guild's annual juried show that runs April 11- May 9. This year's show is at the Richland County Library at 7400 Parklane Road. Exhibits are open to the public. An awards ceremony and brief guild meeting will be at 10:30, May 9. Shelter celebrates 30 years
      The Women's Shelter has always depended heavily on local support for its mission. Now, with many sources of federal and state funding dwindling, this program is putting on a birthday bash to celebrate its story and build for the future. It's been 30 years since the Shelter settled into its permanent location on North Main Street, and a party is in the making.
