Lady Cards squeak by Hammond
Cardinal Newman's Chelsea Goodwin and Hammond's Perri Shockley battle for the ball. Hammond's Sarah Prickett launched a bomb from the far right side of the field that sailed over the outstretched arms of Cardinal Newman goalkeeper Beth Eckstein to give the Skyhawks a 1- 0 lead, but in the end, it was the Cardinals that prevailed 3- 2 in a SCISA 3A Region I girls' soccer match- up at Hammond.
Prickett's shot in the tenth minute was one of only three the Skyhawks managed in the first half. Meanwile, the Cardinals rattled off ten, but did not score until Chelsea Goodwin collided with Hammond goalkeeper Caroline Hudon as the two scrambled for a loose ball. Hudon fell down and Goodwin scored to tie the contest 1- 1 in the 20th minute.
The scored remained tied until three minutes into the second half when Meredith Peter blasted a long shot from the center of the field over the arms of Hudon giving Cardinal Newman a 2- 1 lead.
The Cardinals remained the aggressor rattling off four more shots, before the Skyhawks finally got two quick ones in the 56th minute; the second of which from Sarah Specter bounced off the cross bar.
Cardinal Newman's Kara Lighthart (l) and Hammond's Sarah Prickett go for the header. Seven minutes later, the Skyhawks rattled off four consecutive shots of their own. One of those shots came off a perfectly placed corner kick from Prickett. Specter headed the corner kick towards a seemingly empty net, but second half goalkeeper Molly Rainwater made a lunging save to preserve Cardinal Newman's lead. Two more Hammond corner kicks came up empty as well.
Alexa Barnes then extended Cardinal Newman's lead to 3- 1 with a powerful shot that bounced off Hudon's hands into the goal 72nd minute. However, the Skyhawks were not done. Four minutes later, Specter freed herself in front of the Cardinal Newman goal with several nifty moves, then booted a right footer into the left side of the net to tighten the score at 3- 2.
No one else could manage a shot in the final four minutes and the Cardinals earned the victory.
