Diamonds fight but fall to Falcons
The wind and rain held off just long enough for A.C. Flora to earn a 4- 0 victory over visiting Lower Richland at Bolden Stadium on Friday, March 27. Yareth Gonzalez, Daniel Weldon, Trevor Moreland, and Cameron Wegrzyn each put a goal on the board for the Falcons against the outmanned Diamond Hornets.
Flora put near- constant pressure on the LR defense as Gonzalez, Wegrzyn, Ammar Al Khaledi, and Roger Triminio led the Falcon charge. Yet, the barrage of offense netted just one goal in the first 30 minutes of action.
The Diamonds' defense withstood the multitude of Flora runs and shots as keeper Jarod Washington made several quality saves.
On the other end of the field, Djordan Porter sent a strong shot just wide of the goal for LR, a serious challenge to draw even in the 25th minute.
In the final ten minutes of the first half, the Flora attack overwhelmed Lower Richland as the Falcons tallied two more goals, including Moreland's strike just moments before halftime.
Despite trailing by three goals, the game within the game was the continued improvement of Lower Richland's young team, even from halfto- half. Eddie Vergara, Paul Stinson, and Michael Brown fought valiantly in the midfield throughout the match and in the second half in particular, moved the ball deeper into the Flora half of the field.
As the game continued, LR earned longer spells of possession with Vergara and Stinson playing a nice two- man game in the attacking midfield.
Yet, it was not quite enough to slow Flora down. Wegrzyn dribbled through several LR defenders to record an impressive goal in the 46th minute, earning Flora's final margin of four goals. But Lower Richland did not give up. Jawaun Scott, James Carner, Matthew Brown, and Bendito Moye anchored the Diamonds' defense, preventing any further goal- scoring opportunities from the Falcons.
