Mark Greenwood pitched a complete game shutout, and Robert Bonner went 3- for- 4 with two runs batted in to lead the Cardinal Newman Cardinals to a 10- 0 whitewashing of the Ben Lippen Falcons on Tuesday, March 24, 2009, at Polo Field in Columbia.

The Cardinals (3- 5, 1- 3 in Region I- AAA) won their first home game in four tries, all region contests. Cardinal Newman was led by Greenwood (2- 1), who lowered his ERA to 1.73 in pitching his second shutout of the year. He struck out seven and walked only two, while his teammates played flawless defense behind him.

Offensively, Bonner singled and scored in the third. He singled and drove in two runs and scored in the fourth when the Cardinals broke open a close game. He singled again in the fifth, keeping the inning alive for Rush Tompkins, whose two- run single ended the game. Taylor Patten went 2- for- 3 with an RBI and a stolen base to help the Cardinals to their best offensive output of the season.

The Falcons (4- 6, 2- 4), mounted only one serious threat to the Cardinals, loading the bases in the fourth inning on consecutive

singles by Joey Carter, starting pitcher Chad Burnett

(0- 2), and Isaac Elsenheimer. But Greenwood struck out third baseman Austin Graham to end the inning.

The Cardinals host Bishop England on Wednesday, March 25, and travel to Richard Winn on Friday, March 27. The Falcons travel to St. Joseph's March 26 and then host Hammond April 14.
