Bearcats win with PK's
BC's Katie Busbee and Dreher's Nikki Fettig battle for the ball. McKay Sharpe's dramatic equalizer in the 72nd minute for Dreher sent the match between the host Blue Devils and visiting Brookland- Cayce into overtime and eventually penalty kicks at Memorial Stadium on March 24. Bearcat sophomore Haley Powell delivered the winning penalty in the fourth round earning BC a 2- 1 victory over 15th ranked Dreher.
Just 11 minutes into the match, BC scored with freshman Carlyn Fralick slipping through the Dreher defense, giving the Lady Bearcats the early advantage. Fralick, Pia Von Danwitz, and Kimmy Baston pressured the Dreher back line throughout the first half. Standing in their way was the Blue Devils' Josephine Fome who routinely denied through passes and cleared several BC opportunities from deep in Dreher territory.
The Blue Devils struggled with possession for most of the match in large part due to the strong midfield play of BC's Jaya Wall. But despite the constant pressure from the midfield forward, the Bearcats could not find the goal again. Baston peppered Dreher keeper Madi Kazadi in the early second half, but nothing could get past the freshman goalie.
Late in the second half, Dreher finally was able to earn some possession deep in the BC half of the field. Allie Reid and Allyson Hill provided the impetus in the midfield, and Melissa Bloom had a nice opportunity midway through the half. It finally all came together when Sharpe scored just eight minutes from time to even the score at 1- 1.
Both sides fought hard through the ten minutes of overtime, but neither was particularly close to winning the game. Instead, penalties were used to determine the winner of the hard- fought match.
The Bearcats connected on all four of their attempts. Dreher barely missed on its first attempt, sailing just over the crossbar, before BC keeper Whitney Salonich made a diving save to Dreher's last attempt to earn the away victory for the Lady Bearcats.
