Thomas Winstead, Gabe Roldan, and Mike Beaudoin each got goals for Cardinal Newman as the Cardinals beat the Ben Lippen Falcons 3- 0 in a region contest at Ben Lippen Tuesday, March 24 that was closer than the final score would indicate.

Despite the fact the Cardinals out shot the Falcons about 20 to 4, Cardinal Newman held a precarious 1- 0 lead until the 72nd minute of the contest. Winstead gave the Cardinals that lead after getting tackled in the box and sailing two shots over the crossbar, finally finding the back of the net when a centered pass bounced around in front of the goal in the 25th minute, and he punched it in.

The relentless Cardinal attack continued as they rattled off shot after shot, but most either sailed over the top or wide. Ben Lippen junior goalkeeper Zach Harris also collected four saves and deflected numerous balls out of the box.

Even though the Falcons got just four shots, they did get three good opportunities to score. In the 58th minute, Jonathan Gilpatrick blasted a crossing pass that found Robbie Cook's foot in front of the Cardinal Newman goal, but Cook's shot sailed left. In the 65th minute, Davis Powell's header bounced down off the crossbar just in front of the goal, but Cardinal Newman goalkeeper Timmy Cunningham grabbed the loose ball before any Falcon could get to it. The Falcons would get off only one more shot, but Cunningham collected the save.

Meanwhile, the Cardinals continued to press and the Ben Lippen defense eventually succumbed to the pressure in the 72nd minute. Winstead headed the ball into the box to Beaudoin. Beaudoin kept the ball alive drawing the goalkeeper, which allowed Roldan to collect the loose ball and score. Two minutes later, Beaudoin booted a running left- footer past the diving Harris.

Cardinal Newman improves to 4- 3- 1 overall and 2- 0 in region play while Ben Lippen falls to 0- 7 overall and 0- 4 in region play.
