Cardinals down Blue Devils

Cardinal Newman's tough back four dominated Dreher's offensive attack, and the Cardinals' offense simply overpowered the Blue Devil defense in a 3- 1 away victory on March 13. Thomas Winstead and Mike Beaudoin scored goals for Cardinal Newman while Collin Glass hit the back of the net for Dreher. The Cardinals' third goal was an own- goal.
Beginning in the early moments and continuing throughout the match, Cardinal Newman's offensive push simply bombarded the Dreher defense. The Cardinals sent wave after wave of forwards and midfielders into the box, challenging Dreher's keeper on several occasions.
While the Cardinals' relentless shots were difficult for the Devils to defend, it was the strong runs of possession that ultimately doomed Dreher. Stringing together passes between Winstead, Mike Maracich, Ryan Zurcher, and Nick O'Rourke, the Cardinal Newman offense slowly drained the life out of Dreher.
In the game's eighth minute, Mike Beaudoin nearly scored for Cardinal Newman. Several minutes later, Dreher's Byron Quinatoa just missed a difficult shot, slipping it too far left. In the 18th minute, Winstead chipped a shot into the top right corner of the goal for Cardinal Newman's first goal. Just eight minutes later, Beaudoin found an opening and redeemed his missed opportunity early in the half with the Cardinals' second goal.

The score would remain 2- 1 for most of the rest of the match. Cardinal Newman's back four of Davis Lemon, Zach Hrovat, Kyle Gawinski, and Edward Dannelly repeatedly denied Dreher pushes, particularly those of Quinatoa.
Dreher did have several nice chances in the second half as Cam Caldwell and Robert Switzer each had strong shots that were saved by Cardinal Newman's keeper. But in the 72nd minute, after missing two earlier shots in the second half, the Cardinals' Zurcher was able to score from a deflection and give the visitors a 3- 1 final margin.
