Medicare beneficiaries urged to maintain healthy diet
Medicare beneficiaries in the state of South Carolina experience higher rates of chronic illnesses such as diabetes and heart failure. Over 80 percent of all Medicare beneficia ries have one or more chronic illnesses, which can lead to serious complications such as hospitalization, if not properly managed.
Studies have shown that diet and exercise can help prevent complications from many common chronic illnesses. To help Columbia seniors with chronic illness better manage their health, Care Improvement Plus, a Medicare Advantage Special Needs Plan, is offering free health education seminars and farmers market events to help area Medicare beneficiaries focus on maintaining a healthy diet and taking steps to improve their health. Seminars also include a presentation on how Special Needs Plans such as Care Improvement Plus offer benefits and services to help Medicare beneficiaries avoid health complications.
Managing a chronic illness and maintaining a healthy diet can often seem overwhelming. For this reason, Care Improvement Plus urges those with chronic illnesses to take the following steps to improve their diet and reduce their risk of health complications:
• Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegeta- bles; always check the label for added sodium or other preservatives when purchasing canned fruits or vegetables.
• Try to plan out healthy meals before going food shopping. This will help cut down on costs and encourage you to eat better during the week.
• The amount of grains each person needs each day varies; choose whole grain foods whenever possible.
