Sistercare honors two survivors

Maureen Jennings Maureen Jennings Priscilla Givens and Maureen Jennings were the honorees at Sistercare's Women of the Year Event on Thursday, March 19, 2009, at Sistercare's Ad-ministrative Office, 1820 Morlaine Drive, Cayce, SC.

Givens was selected as a result of the significant life changes she made and her transition from domestic violence victim to Sistercare volunteer. She now mentors other battered women and gives hope to them in believing they can live violence- free. Givens explains, "After what Sistercare did for me, I could not do any less to give back."

Jennings became involved with Sistercare when she sought an Order of Protection in Family Court. She had left her abusive spouse of nearly 17 years and was determined to find safety and security for her children and herself. During participation in a range of Sistercare services, Jennings made many gains that are reflected in the life she has created for her family. Deb Haney, Sistercare's coordinator of Community Advocacy Programs, states, "Ms. Jennings is an exceptional woman who set her standards high and succeeded in all that she pursued.".

Priscilla Givens Priscilla Givens In addition, the Allstate Foundation will make a $25,000 check presentation to Sistercare for an "Economics Against Abuse Program" that benefited one of the Women of the Year.

Sistercare is a private, nonprofit, United Way partner agency that served over 5,600 battered women and their children in 2008.
