Joe Austin Spring Valley's Vikings Drill Team defeated 10 Army, Navy, and Air Force High Schools to win the 2009 Low Country Championship for the 15th consecutive year.

The team placed first overall to win "The Hunley Sword Saber" Award for the

best drill team in the state's low country region. The team placed

first in seven categories out Austin of eight.

The Spring Valley Chess Team played in the South Carolina Scholastic Championship the last weekend in February. Joe Austin was high scorer with 2.5 points.

Kristen Snowdeal was the top scoring female player, which earned her a trip to the Susan Polgar National Invitational Tournament in Lubbock, Texas.
