      Blythewood Middle School and Columbia College have collaborated to form Girls Empowered, a leadership class for eighth grade girls. The program is designed to provide mentoring, career exploration and leadership development opportunities for girls. All of the activities are geared toward boosting courage, commitment, competence, and confidence.

Blythewood eighth grader to participate in National Geography Bee
      Eighth grader Wendell H. "Hank" Estep has qualified to represent Blythewood Middle School and participate at the state level of the National Geography Bee, Sponsored by Google and Plum Creek Timber Co. The State Bee will be held on Friday, April 3, at the South Carolina State Museum, 301 Gervais Street, in Columbia.

Covenant seventh grader to participate in National Geography Bee
      David Wright, son of Chaplain (Col.) and Mrs. Phillip Wright, is a seventh grade student at Covenant Classical Christian School. After winning his school's geography bee, David took a qualifying test to become one of 100 students meeting to compete in the state bee competition.

Senator Lourie receives painting in honor of Disabilities Awareness Month
      Senator Joel Lourie was presented with a painting by a young artist, Yasmeen Zakkary, in recognition of people with disabilities. Yasmeen has Atypical Rett's Syndrome, a rare genetic neurological disorder. Yasmeen is the daughter of Marti and Mike Zakkary of Columbia.

Hand Middle School eighth grader to participate in National Geography Bee
      Jake Kassel, an eighth grade student at Hand Middle School, has been notified by the National Geographic Society that he is one of the semifinalists eligible to compete in the 2009 South Carolina Geographic Bee. The 2009 South Carolina Geographic Bee will be held at the South Carolina State Museum in Columbia on Friday, April 3, 2009.

     Ranger Stacey Jenson, Sesqui State Park Naturalist, met with Bridge Creek third grade classes to talk about the kinds of plants and animals they might find in a wetlands habitat. There is a designated wetlands area located on the school property.

Twenty- four Richland One Schools win elite national nutrition awards
      It's the national gold standard of school student nutrition awards. Twenty- four Richland One elementary schools have won the Healthier US School Challenge Gold Award from the US Department of Agriculture. A celebration honoring their achievement will be Thursday, March 26 at 8:30 am at Watkins Nance Elementary School, 2525 Barhamville Road.
