Pine Grove Rosenwald School listed in National Register of Historic Places
The Richland County Recreation Commission's Pine Grove Rosenwald School is now listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
The Pine Grove community deeded their historic school building and grounds to the Recreation Commission in 2004. To date, $94,000 in grants from the Richland County Conservation Commission and $50,000 from the Lowe's Charitable and Educational Foundation Preservation Fund have been awarded to the Richland County Recreation Foundation, enabling the Commission to begin the restoration process. The school will serve as a museum to share the history of Rosenwald Schools and the African American community in the Pine Grove area and as a field study destination for elementary school children.
Pine Grove School, one of the last of 15 Rosenwald Schools built in Richland County still standing, provided educational opportunities for African American students.
The National Trust for Historic Preservation named Rosenwald Schools to its list of America's 11 Most Endangered Historic Places in 2002.
