Blue Devils bedevil Bearcats
B- C's Lorenzo Mitchell cannot prevent Dreher's Derrick Halback from getting a shot off in the second quarter. Quayshun Hawkins scored 25 points for Dreher as the Blue Devils out- gunned Brookland- Cayce 82- 60 on Friday February 6.
The Blue Devils opened the game with a 12- 0 run that took barely two minutes to accomplish.
Hawkins, Dominic Boyd, and Derrick Halback all scored at least five points in the first for the Devils. But B- C's Oneal Jones kept the Bearcats alive with two three- pointers late in the quarter, and Jake Benton scored four inside points to reduce the Dreher lead to 21- 12 after one.
Hawkins, James Whitehead, and Dominique Nathaniel were the highlights of the second quarter with each scoring at least six points for the Blue Devils. Whitehead's tough drives to the hoop gave Dreher another dimension beyond its early- game deep shots. Jones made two more three- pointers, and Jonathan Rumph attacked the basket but the Bearcats simply could not get closer than eight points. The half ended with Dreher ahead 44- 27.
Dreher's Quayshun Hawkins shoots over B- C's Reily Kilbride. The third quarter featured much of the same as Hawkins led the Devils with eight points, pushing the Bearcats to the edge of a blowout. Rumph and Mario Grant kept B- C's offensive game going, combining for nine points in the third, but it was not enough to slow down the Dreher barrage as the Devils led 63- 41.
Grant poured in ten points more in the fourth for B- C, but the story of the game was how Dreher's substitutes all scored in the final moments of the game. Kevin Branch, Phillip Wells, Tyler Harris, Tim Pierce, and Tysean Dow all scored for the Blue Devils to the delight of the enthusiastic home crowd and unending joy of the rest of the Dreher team.
